I used to think art activities for toddlers meant sitting them down with paint and a canvas and producing something frameable. Then I had a toddler and understood that the point of toddler art is the process, not the product. My son painted a fish at nursery once. It looked like he had applied paint with his entire body, which he had. I was asked if I wanted to display it. I said absolutely yes and it hung in our kitchen for a year. Toddler art is not about the outcome. It is about exploring materials, developing fine motor skills, learning cause and effect, and experiencing the pure satisfaction of making a mark on the world. Simple art activities that work brilliantly: finger painting on a high chair tray is perfect for under 2s. Just squirt some washable paint directly on the tray. Let them smear and explore. Zero setup, easy cleanup. Stamp printing with cut vegetables. Cut a potato or apple in half, add a layer of paint on a plate, press and stamp. Toddlers find the print reveal genuinely magical every single time. Collage with torn paper, tissue paper, stickers, or natural materials collected on a walk. Glue stick plus paper plus whatever they can find equals an hour of engaged play. Chalk on outdoor surfaces: no cleanup, no mess inside, enormous canvases. Drawing with chunky crayons or washable markers on large paper. Sometimes the fridge. Accept this. Watercolours are easier than you think for toddlers: chunky toddler brushes, a small palette, paper, a cup of water. They make brown soup every time and love every second.
