6 Month Old Milestones: What to Expect

Six months. Half a year. You made it through the hardest bit and somehow ended up with this round, drooly, absolutely delightful little person who laughs at your face and grabs everything within reach. At 6 months most babies can hold their head steady without support, push up onto their hands during tummy time, roll from front to back and some are rolling back to front too, sit briefly with support, and bear some weight on their legs when held standing. Reaching and grabbing is becoming much more intentional at 6 months. They will reach for toys, bring things to their mouth to explore them, and pass objects from hand to hand. At 6 months most babies are babbling with consonant sounds: ba, ma, da, ga. They laugh, squeal with delight, and make sounds to get your attention. They recognize familiar faces and voices and may show early signs of stranger anxiety. Six months is typically when solid foods are introduced alongside milk feeds. Signs of readiness include sitting up with minimal support, showing interest in food, and loss of the tongue thrust reflex. Talk to your doctor if your 6-month-old is not holding their head steady, is not reaching for objects, does not respond to sounds, or does not smile or show recognition of familiar faces.
